Spider Veins

What Are Spider Veins?

Spider veins are small, damaged veins that can appear on the surface of the legs or face. They are usually not painful or harmful, but some people may experience burning or itching and may also wish to treat them for cosmetic reasons. Leg spider veins can be blue, purple, or red and may appear in the form of thin lines, webs, or branches. People sometimes also refer to them as thread veins.

What is the difference between
spider veins and varicose veins?

Spider veins and varicose veins are different forms of a medical condition called venous insufficiency. In the legs, both conditions result from having weakened or damaged valves in the veins. However, varicose veins are larger and deeper than spider veins. They may also appear lumpy or twisted and are usually flesh-coloured or red. These two vein conditions have different symptoms.

What causes spider veins during pregnancy?

Not only are your hormones raging at their highest level in your life, but the increased volume of blood you’re carrying creates significant pressure on your blood vessels, causing even small veins to swell. And genetics can predispose you to spider veins, varicose veins, and stretch marks.

What are the best treatment
options to get rid of spider veins?

At The Vein Institute of Toronto, spider veins can be removed by laser treatment or sclerotherapy. Both of these treatment options provide great results with almost no downtime. Patients most often can resume even high-intensity physical activity the next day.

Surface Laser Treatment For Spider Veins

Laser vein treatment takes less than an hour and is performed in a doctor’s office or clinic and under local anesthesia. The procedure uses a focused beam of light to target the spider vein without damaging nearby tissue. The laser heats and destroys the spider vein and it disappears over a period of four to six weeks.

Sclerotherapy For Leg Spider Veins

We perform sclerotherapy after surface laser therapy utilizing the Veinlite® technology. The Veinlite® patented Side-Transillumination provides uniform illumination and visualization of unprecedented clarity. Light generated by a halogen bulb travels through a high-quality fiber into the Veinlite® ring, where it is directed into the skin at an angle so that it is concentrated in a bright spot under the skin. The bright spot behaves like a virtual light source below the skin that transilluminates the open area within the ring. Superficial blood vessels are seen with high clarity and networks of varicose veins can be examined in detail. This technology allows us to completely map out the feeding veins and perform a complete treatment with decreased chance of recurrence.

Sclerotherapy For Leg Spider Veins | The Vein Institute of Toronto

Sclerotherapy treats large areas of veins by injecting a solution through a tiny needle. The solution, which irritates the vein and causes it to scar and shut, disperses to all the branches of the vein. You can watch them disappear immediately. It’s a very efficient procedure and is much less likely to cause skin damage. The needle is so small and delicate that it’s almost painless.

How does the Spider Vein Laser Treatment work?

The Nd: YAG laser penetrates the skin into the superficial blood vessel. The heat generated from the laser coagulates the blood inside the spider vein, causing it to collapse and seal. Over the next few weeks, the spider veins will disappear and all the blood will be removed by the body’s scavenging cells. The newer laser treatments allow the delivery of a precise dosage of energy to each blood vessel without injuring any nearby structures.

Skin pigmentation can impact the effectiveness of any surface laser treatment. Therefore, the patient should have no sun exposure for four weeks prior to treatment to guard against blistering and scarring.

Complimentary Physician Consultation!

How do I know if I am a candidate for laser vein treatment? At The Vein Institute of Toronto™, all patients will first undergo a complimentary physician consultation involving a focussed venous history, detailed venous physical examination and a duplex ultrasound to rule out truncal (Great saphenous or Small saphenous) venous insufficiency. We have developed a unique vein mapping technique to completely map out your spider and reticular veins and ensure a complete treatment plan. The initial consultation will allow us to develop a personalized treatment plan tailored to your schedule and goals.
